QUICK FACTS
- Who: Nexus for Jim Le Fevre and electronic artist, SBTRKT
- What: A series of 3D printed creatures for SBTRKT’s ‘stroboscope’
- Where: Displayed at Inner-City Arts event, LA on July 25, then LA’s Guerilla Galleries on July 28
BRIEF
Nexus approached INITION to provide the 3D printed contingent of an exciting collaborative project between director Jim Le Fevre, electronic artist SBTRKT and sponsor, Red Bull Music.
The project, a prelude to an upcoming promotional video for the artist’s latest track ‘New Dorp New York’, was, once complete, to be displayed at several venues around Los Angeles.
SOLUTION
Using the individual frame shots supplied to us by Nexus, who digitally animated the artist’s vision, we provided 40 individual, 3D printed versions of the feline character featured originally on SBTRKT’s album cover for Wonder Where We Land. The prints were created in various forms, replicating the gradual stages of its emergence from the water which SBTRKT described as ‘representing the creature’s birth’.
RESULTS
The result was a 8 x 6 ft structure which was mounted on a spinning base and illuminated by a strobe rig. In action the structure created the effect of fluid movement, tricking the viewer into thinking they were watching an animation.
The project was featured on Creative Review.
