The Brief
Having already commissioned lego-artist Fabian Moritz to recreate the best moments of the Football World Cup in 2010, the Guardian sought Inition’s help to create a series of short stop-motion 3D films inspired by the global sporting event taking place in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012 for their brick-by-brick series.
Our Solution
Stereographer Campbell Goodwille and 3D camera technician Peter Collis supported the shoot which was filmed with Nikon stills cameras and a Mark Roberts Motion Control system.
Campbell was able to monitor and review in 3D live on set, allowing for precise control over the 3D effect. The sequences were edited at the Guardian with the stereoscopic conform and depth grading handled at Inition.
Because the videos had to be published online less than 24 hours after each event, work began on the clips as soon as the live events ended.
Moritz designed and built four lego stadiums for the shoots, including the Aquatics Centre and a 600 lego-man capacity Basketball Arena. The largest lego construction was the Olympic Stadium, measuring a huge 3m long and 1.5m wide.
The Results
All videos were published online within 24 hours of the live events and proved highly popular online, with some of the featured athletes posting the films on their personal blogs.
Tina Westland, Content Sales Manager at the Guardian said: “Working with Inition was a seamless experience. Their team were able to turn around the 3D clips for our brick-by-brick series in exceptionally quick time, which was a key requirement in this project. We would definitely work with Inition again.”
